The real reason your closet still isn’t clean (and what that says about you)

Hey Sis,

I recently shared on my social that I finally finished decluttering my closet — something I swore would take me a weekend.

Spoiler: it took four weeks!!

And I know I’m not alone in this. We’ve all decided this is the weekend we’ll tackle the closet, clean the house, clear the emails.

But here’s the thing no one really says out loud:

We set realistic goals — but give ourselves wildly unrealistic timelines.

We expect things that should take days or weeks to magically fit into 3 hours on a Sunday afternoon — and when that doesn’t happen, we feel like we failed.

But you didn’t fail.

You just need to approach our goals differently.

When I finally broke down my closet detox into mini-goals, it all became manageable. Not easy — but manageable.

And what I discovered lightened the load — significantly.

The hardest things to let go of weren’t the dresses that didn’t fit or the hangers full of tags-never-removed clothes.

It was the “meh” stuff.

The clothes I wear all the time, but don’t actually like.

You know what I mean:

The pants that sorta fit.

The top that’s fine for errands.

The sweater that’s faded but familiar.

They’re not exciting.

They’re not awful.

They’re just… there.

And they take up space — in your closet, and in your energy.

These aren’t just clothes.

They’re decisions on autopilot.

They’re symptoms of decision fatigue — the kind that comes from being a high-achieving woman who doesn’t have the time to reinvent her outfit every morning.

So we grab the “meh” and keep it moving.

But what would it feel like to not settle for “fine”?

Here’s how I got clarity and momentum back:

Instead of just purging by type (workout, leisure, fun-night-out), I asked myself:

  1. Do I love it?
Yes? Great. Keep it — if it fits now or soon. Set an expiration date if not.
  2. Do I dislike it?
Toss it. If it’s dingy, stretched, or no longer feels like you — it’s draining you.
  3. Do I just tolerate it?
These are the sneaky ones. Worn-out neutrals. The “it’ll do” pile.
Ask: Why am I keeping this? What could I wear instead that I actually enjoy?

I know so many of you want to enter 2026 feeling clear, organized, and fresh. And that is still possible.

But let’s release the idea that it all has to be done by Friday.

Start with the smallest step possible: One drawer. One corner. One dreadful floor pile.

Because when your closet feels like a mirror, “fine” just isn’t enough.

You deserve to feel like the best version of you — especially in your comfiest clothes.

You don’t have to do it all. Just choose one spot.
So… what’s yours? Reply and let me know!
